Sempra receives Louisiana's first Class VI Permit

The Low Carbon Briefing

Louisiana permits first Class VI application

  • On Thursday, Louisiana permitted Sempra’s Hackberry Sequestration their Class VI permit in Cameron Parish

  • The permit aims to decarbonize Sempra’s nearby LNG facility with a 1 well development sequestering 2 million tons per year

  • This permit is a monumental step for Gulf Coast CCS industry - providing more certainty to permit timelines and expectations for the other 30 Louisiana Class VI permits in the queue.

ExxonMobil continues to expand sequestration assets

  • In March, ExxonMobil submitted a 5 well Class VI application for their Hummingbird sequestration asset in Allen, Parish

  • Hummingbird is their third organically permitted asset excluding legacy Denbury projects including Rose (Texas - 3 wells), Mockingbird (Louisiana - Stratigraphic testing), and Sunflower (Texas - 4 wells)

Carbon Clean announced first completion of commercial scale Carbon Capture in Abu Dhabi

  • Successfully completed the first industrial deployment of CycloneCC technology at Fertiglobe’s nitrogen fertilizer plant in Al Ruwais, Abu Dhabi - the modular carbon capture unit operated for six months, totaling 4,000 operating hours.

  • The company installed the CycloneCC unit in under a week, marking a significant milestone for the technology’s feasibility.

  • After successful deployment, CycloneCC reached TRL 7, enabling further scale-up and commercialization.

  • Carbon Clean is quickly becoming the partner of choice when selecting carbon capture technology and rivaling SLB’ Capturi (previously Aker Carbon Capture) to capture the popular biogenic CO2 from Waste-to-Energy plants in Europe

Frontier Carbon Solutions plans for first CO2 hub by rail

  • Frontier recently added more CO2 storage to their permitted Sweetwater Hub called Project Speed Goat - a 7 well (0.3 MTPA per well) development on BLM land in Southwest Wyoming

  • Project Sprint - a liquefaction to rail transportation method, aims to reduce overall CCS project costs by eliminating extra compression required for CO2 pipelines

  • Frontier aims to partner with heavy industry and ethanol facilities to rail CO2 to their 100+ million CO2 storage capacity assets

Northern Lights expands to 5 million tons per year storage in offshore Norway

  • Northern Lights JV, along with its partners Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, has announced a Final Investment Decision to further expand Norway’s flagship carbon transportation and sequestration project. This expansion will increase the storage injection capacity from 1.5 million tons per year to 5 million tons per year by 2028.

  • Additionally, Stockholm Exergi has signed an agreement to capture 900,000 tons of CO2 for sequestration into the Northern Lights facility.

  • The Northern Lights project received approval to begin injection in September 2024 and is currently being developed with two injection wells, 31/5-A-7 AH and 31/5-C-1 H. The project aims to become the primary sequestration hub for CO2 emissions across mainland Europe, as well as the Nordics.

  • Norway, alongside the United Kingdom and Denmark, has been a leader in carbon storage leases. To date, Norway has granted 13 offshore licenses for CO2 exploration and exploitation to developers, including major companies like Harbour Energy, TotalEnergies, and Equinor. These leases cover millions of acres, offering significant potential for CO2 storage.

HIF Global and Mabanaft sign e-Methanol offtake HOA

  • The deal covers the purchase of approximately 100,000 tonnes per annum of e-Methanol for shipping and industrial uses

  • The agreement includes production facilities in Uruguay, the U.S., and Chile

European Energy has produced the first batch of industry-grade e-methanol at its Power-to-X facility in Kassø, Denmark

  • The Kassø facility is the world’s largest commercial e-methanol facility, utilizing renewable electricity and biogenic CO₂ to produce carbon-neutral e-methanol.

  • The facility will officially begin commercial operations in May 2025

  • The facility is powered by the nearby Kassø solar park, the largest solar park in the Nordics - 300 MW capacity
