POET partners with Tallgrass, BKV enters South Texas
The Low Carbon Briefing

POET, the world's largest biofuel producer, and Tallgrass, a leading Midwest CCUS developer, have reached agreements to connect POET's Fairmont, Nebraska ethanol facility to Tallgrass's CO2 pipeline. This partnership will allow POET to capture bioCO2 and transport it for permanent sequestration in Tallgrass’ permitted Wyoming sequestration hub. The pipeline, which is being converted from a natural gas line, is expected to start operations in 2025. POET’s Fairmont plant, one of Nebraska’s largest ethanol production facilities with an annual capacity of 128 million gallons, is estimated to capture between 350,000 to 400,000 metric tons of CO2 per year under this agreement.
BKV reached FID on Lima Tango CCS in Mcmullen County, Texas. The Class II well plans to inject 90,000 mt CO2 per year from gas processing. No specific gas processing facilities were announced but likely candidates are either Energy Transfers’ Las Tiendas Plant or Enterprise's Shilling Gas Plant.
Bloom Energy and Chart Industries have formed a partnership to develop a carbon capture solution using natural gas and fuel cells for near-zero carbon baseload power. Chart will apply its carbon capture expertise to process Bloom's high-purity CO2 exhaust stream for utilization or sequestration. Bloom's fuel cell technology produces a high concentration CO2-rich stream to make carbon capture more cost-effective compared to conventional combustion technologies.
South Korea is set to implement new legislation this week to support the CCUS sector. The law, confirmed by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, will outline procedures for CCUS operations, including selecting offshore carbon storage sites and managing related infrastructure. It also provides financial and administrative support for companies in this field. The law is aimed at helping South Korea meet its 2030 emissions reduction target of 40% below 2018 levels and its ultimate goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Captura, a California-based carbon removal company, has opened a new pilot plant in Kona, Hawaii, in collaboration with Equinor. The facility will capture 1,000 tons of carbon annually and builds on previous successes in Los Angeles with Captura’s direct ocean capture (DOC) technology.
China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) began production of the Bohai 26-6 oilfield, the world’s largest metamorphic rock oilfield. CNOOC maintains that as one of the demonstration CCUS projects of the Company in Bohai, the project adopts advanced technology to capture and separate the associated carbon dioxide from crude oil extraction and reinject back for EOR. The project is expected to bury approximately 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide throughout its life cycle.

Verso Energy, a French company, has signed a cooperation agreement with the City of Oulu, Finland, to build an e-SAF plant located in Oulu's port area. The plant will produce 80,000 tonnes of e-SAF annually by combining green hydrogen with bigenic captured CO2. The €1.4 billion agreement will last until 2026, during which both parties will finalize implementation details. This marks Verso’s first project outside of France.
Norsk e-Fuel, Prime Capital and RES have announced a collaboration to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in North Sweden. Located in the municipality of Ånge, “Project Alby” is planned to produce a 80,0000 tons of e-SAF annually and marks Norsk e-Fuel’s expansion into Sweden. Under the lead of Norsk e-Fuel and Prime Capital, the companies will now mature the development jointly.
Sweden is a leading country to develop e-Fuels due to their clean grid and abundant biogenic CO2 to produce European compliance RNFBO fuels. Norsk e-Fuel joins Liquid Wind, Perstorp, and Uniper.
