Louisiana Governor Landry pauses new CCS projects

  • Louisiana has issued a temporary moratorium on new Class VI carbon-sequestration permit applications, pausing new reviews until updated safety and transparency standards are implemented

  • Existing applications will proceed, but developers must provide detailed documentation on landowner rights, public engagement, and local economic impacts

  • The directive strengthens project oversight, requiring agencies to enhance public transparency, align pipeline and well safety with federal regulations, and include workforce, economic, and community-risk assessments in all reviews

  • There are 32 applications in the queue accounting for 107 Class VI wells

  • The Class VI review team will concentrate on the following permit applications:

Topsoe & Sasol partner in Germany for e-SAF demonstration facility

  • Topsoe, Sasol, DLR, and Griesemann Gruppe signed a cooperation agreement to build and operate an e-fuels demonstration plant at the Leuna Chemical Complex in Germany.

  • The facility will produce about 2,500 tons per year of synthetic fuels, mainly kerosene, beginning in Q4 2027.

  • Feedstocks will include renewable hydrogen and biogenic CO₂, enabling low-carbon fuel production.

  • The project is backed by €130 million in funding from the German Federal Ministry for Transport.

  • Topsoe will provide its eREACT™ hydrogen and fuel synthesis technology, Sasol will supply its G2L™ Fischer-Tropsch process, and Griesemann Gruppe will serve as EPC contractor.

StormFisher Hydrogen acquires Recyclage Carbone Varennes in Canada from Enerkem

  • StormFisher Hydrogen has acquired Recyclage Carbone Varennes (RCV) in Québec to repurpose the site into North America’s first large-scale, low-carbon methanol plant

  • The plant will use clean hydrogen and captured CO₂ to produce over 72,000 tonnes of low-carbon methanol annually, capturing more than 100,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year

  • Announced in December 2020, the CAD $875 million Varennes biofuel plant will convert over 200,000 tonnes per year of non-recyclable and wood waste into about 125 million liters of biofuels, powered by an 87 MW electrolyzer for green hydrogen developed by Shell, Suncor, and Enerkem

  • The Canada Infrastructure Bank committed CAD $277 million to the project
