The Low Carbon Briefing

  • CO2 sequestration is heading for the Mountain State. The EPA has granted West Virginia the right to manage Class VI applications similar to Louisiana, Wyoming, and North Dakota.

  • Tenaska (as noted in last week’s newsletter) is teaming up with Svante to form a fully integrated CCS solution. Tenaska has currently announced 10 CCS developments in the U.S. Combining Svante’s capture capability and Tenaska’s transportation and storage developments, the partnership could be a leading solution within the low carbon industry

  • Finding another home for your captured CO2 besides sequestration? The DOE announced $100MM in federal funding for pilot CO2 conversion projects. Projects include biological, catalytic, and mineralization conversions. We’re seeing a growth in VC investment for CO2 conversion projects primarily led by Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures.

  • Bonanza Carbon Capture, an ethanol CCS joint venture between Gary Climate Solutions and Conestoga Energy permitted a test well in Kansas to permanently sequester the facilities 150,000 tons of CO2 per year.

  • ENGIE and Turn2X announce e-NG partnership. Turn2X is capturing biogenic CO2 to turn into carbon neutral natural gas that’s compliant with EU’s RED II & III. The pilot plant is expected to produce 15,000 MWh/yr (~51,000 MMBTU/year).

  • Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and French renewable hydrogen producer Lhyfe have entered a MOU to co-develop green H2 projects in Europe. Lhyfe’s current portfolio includes an e-methanol project in France, 20 MW project in UK and a 10 MW plant in Germany
